10/6/07 - Reunion Meeting Summary
A preliminary planning meeting for the 2008 Mifflin County Reunion was held Saturday evening, October 6, 2007 at the Quality Inn in Burnham, PA. Jim Hollis and his wife, Patty, were visiting PA which was a good opportunity to pull a group together to share ideas and assign tasks in preparation for the reunion to be held Saturday, August 16, 2008 at the Birch Hill Supervisor’s Club in Burnham, PA.
We are fortunate to have Kirk McMinn share his expertise by setting up a website for the reunion information and registration. He is providing the website and setting up a separate e-mail address for us to use at no charge. We appreciate his generosity and expertise in getting it set up. It should make sharing information about the reunion much easier. After discussing various names for the site, it was decided to keep it simple and all encompassing by calling it MifflinCountyReunion.org After the initial details are worked out, Kirk is hoping his involvement will be minimal. If there are any suggestions for improvement or changes that need to be made, contact Jim Hollis, who will be in touch with Kirk.
There was discussion about the best way to get the word out to the various class years that we are targeting. In addition to the graduation years of 1969 through 1973, we are including 1968 since it is the year of their 40th reunion and we thought they might be receptive since they would be in a “reunion state of mind”. Even though anyone will be welcome, it was decided that we still need to have a target group of years so that recent graduates don’t think that it’s intended for them…..as if they would want to hang out with us old folks! Jim asked for volunteers from the group to be Captains for their respective high school class. The following slots were filled:
- 1968
- Lewistown - Naomi (Warntz) Rigel (Frank volunteered his sister)
- 1969
- Chief Logan, Scott Smith
Lewistown – Frank Warntz & Debbie (Heath) Reinhard
- 1971
- Lewistown – Jim Hollis & Barb (Smith) Vogt
- 1973
- Lewistown – Becky (Heath) Deljanovan
Obviously there were many class years for all four schools that did not have a class member present to volunteer, so Tom Earp took on the task of trying to get “Year Captains” assigned for the empty slots. He will keep Jim Hollis informed of any success.
It was the consensus of the group that getting the word out via the local publications would be the best way to reach a good cross section of people. Even though many classmates have moved away from Mifflin County, many still have relatives who live locally and would be able to pass the reunion information on to them. John Bingaman volunteered to get information from The Lewistown Sentinel, The County Observer, Home Town Shopper and Common Ground regarding the cost of advertising and what might be available without charge since it is a reunion. Common Ground would probably do an article on the past reunion, which would give us good publicity for the upcoming reunion. He will check on that.
Dave Quay will check about sponsorship of sporting events on the radio as advertisement, as well as finding out about permission to put up banners at sporting events.
Jim Hollis will talk to John Hilton regarding the new management of Birch Hill and whether or not we are required to use them for catering or if our reservation of the venue was considered to be on the books prior to the management change. That will determine who we will work with to provide the food.
The time span for the reunion was discussed. Since it will not have to be competing for time with another reunion in the evening (as we did in ’06) it was decided to hold it from 3:00 – 8:00 PM or until the fun stops. It will be advertised that the raffle will take place around 7:00. From past experience, quite a few people left after the raffle prizes were drawn (which will probably take until around 8:00) but the partiers will be welcome to stay longer. Because the time frame for the reunion spans the dinner hour, it may change the food choices a little, but we’re still hoping to keep the cost at $10/person. There is money in the treasury from the 2006 raffle proceeds and we probably can count on a similar response for the raffle donations again to allow us to keep the cost down.
